Ruler of Mountains

by Dyonne Marina

In the shadow of the high mountains, where the air is cold and pure, the wind still whispers the ancient legend of the Ruler of Mountains. Long ago, when the earth was still young and the animals began to settle in the young forests of the valley, a darkness threatened to emerge from the mountains. A malevolent creature, with scales as dark as night and eyes like glowing embers, slithered out of the deep crevices of the mountains and made its way through everything that was new and growing. Its arrival brought panic and misery. Young animals disappeared, forests burned, and the shadows of fear reached even into the hearts of the bravest beings.

But there was one creature that fear could not penetrate. It was a young dragon, who did not truly belong in the valley. The other animals always left him alone, secretly afraid of him. And once again, the dragon remained alone as the other creatures of the woods fled.

The day had come when the malevolent being seeped into the woods where the young dragon lived. But even as the dragon was surrounded by its terrifying shadow, he felt no fear. And as a reward for not abandoning the forest, an ancient magic filled the dragon's body. The trees parted, the ground became firmer beneath his feet, and the mist of the woods filled his lungs. A primal roar echoed across the valley, causing the ground to tremble.

The battle was fierce, but the dragon and nature fought as one. The forest gave the dragon the strength to keep fighting. It was a battle forever etched into the valley, and ultimately, with a final merciful strike, the dragon defeated the malevolent creature, which was sucked into the abyss with one last terrible scream.

Peace and tranquility returned to the valley, but the dragon had vanished. Some say the battle proved fatal for him. But others claim that Mother Nature rewarded the dragon by granting him eternal life. One with the mist and the valley, he now rules over the mountains.
